Dear all,
We are pleased to announce that Theodore Kalbfleisch (Gluck Equine Research
Center, University of Kentucky, USA) will be the speaker for the upcoming
talk of the #animal- genomics Special Interest Group, taking place on
Wednesday, February 18th, at 16:00 CET. Find below the abstract of his
talk:
The Post-Genome Era: How Did We Get Here, and Where We Are Going
The presentation traces the journey from the Human Genome Project's 1988
inception through the 2002 initial human genome release, followed by
reference genomes for mammalian species. It discusses the 2022 Telomere-to-
Telomere human assembly achievement and current T2T standards for horse and
donkey genomes. The focus then shifts to modern challenges: understanding
the biology encoded by the sequences we can now measure so accurately,
precisely, and completely. The speaker explores pangenome creation to
catalog species haplotypes and associate them with phenotypes, discussing
technologies that enabled this progress and future directions.
