Graduate Student Opportunity in Genetics, Epigenetics & Bioinformatics
Start Date: Summer or Fall 2026
The Davenport Lab at Washington State University is seeking a highly
motivated M.S. or Ph.D. student to join our team in the areas of genetics,
epigenetics, and bioinformatics. Our group investigates how gene regulatory
mechanisms shape complex traits such as fertility that drive sustainable
and productive livestock systems. We value students who are enthusiastic
about scientific discovery, highly organized, collaborative, and strong
communicators
The successful candidate will work on innovative projects that use cutting-
edge techniques including:
• Single-cell transcriptomic and chromatin accessibility sequencing
• Epigenetic modification sequencing
• Advanced bioinformatic analyses
• Direct work with livestock including tissue collections based on
project requirements
The funded M.S position will focus on bovine liver and rumen epithelium
development.
The funded Ph.D. position will focus on mechanisms of bovine placental
development.
Training & Professional Development
Students in the Davenport Lab will lead and conduct novel research and
publish their findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Presentation
of results at scientific conferences is also encouraged. Students can
tailor their program to gain experience in teaching and extension in
addition to research. Students will have opportunities to interact with
industry partners, mentor undergraduate researchers, and serve as teaching
assistants in Animal Sciences. Graduate assistantships that cover tuition,
stipend, and benefits are available for competitive applicants.
Washington State University is a Carnegie R1 research institution located
in the scenic rolling hills of the Palouse. The Department of Animal
Sciences fosters a supportive and collaborative environment with faculty
and students across a range of disciplines.
Specific Qualifications:
• B.S. (and/or M.S.) in Animal Sciences, Biology, Genetics, or a closely
related field by the time of appointment.
• Meet the requirements for admission to the WSU Graduate School
(https://gradschool.wsu.edu/apply/).
• Strong interest in animal science, molecular genetics, and
bioinformatics.
• Knowledge of animal production systems.
• Strong communication skills in oral and written formats.
• Prior research experience in animal science, biology, genetics, and/or
bioinformatics is desired, but not essential.
Interested applicants can send their C.V. and cover letter expressing their
interest, qualifications, and career goals to Dr. Kimberly Davenport
(kimberly.davenport wsu.edu).
